Donor egg IVF is one of the most effective fertility treatments — but in the UK, it's also one of the most expensive, and donor waiting times can be agonisingly long. Spain, the Czech Republic, and Greece offer a compelling alternative: shorter waits, lower costs, and high-quality clinics. This guide helps UK patients decide which country is right for them.
Why do UK patients go abroad for donor egg IVF?
Two main reasons: (1) Waiting times — UK NHS donor egg waiting lists are 12–24 months; private UK clinics 3–12 months. Spain, Czech Republic, and Greece have donors available in 2–8 weeks. (2) Cost — UK private donor egg IVF costs £7,000–£15,000. Abroad, the same treatment costs £3,000–£7,000 at the clinic. Even with travel, patients save 40–60%. Quality at accredited European clinics is comparable to the UK.

🇪🇸 Spain: The Most Popular Choice
Spain has built the largest donor egg sector in Europe over the past 30+ years. The combination of a large donor pool, short waiting times, strong English-language support, and easy flights from the UK makes it the default choice for most UK patients.
Advantages
- • Largest donor databases in Europe
- • 2–6 week waiting times
- • Excellent English-language patient support
- • Most clinic choice (IVI, Eugin, Institut Marquès)
- • Welcome to single women + same-sex couples
- • Easy 2–3 hour flights from most UK airports
Considerations
- • More expensive than Czech Republic
- • Anonymous donation (child cannot know donor at 18)
- • Large clinics can feel less personal
- • Worth comparing 2–3 clinics for best match
Top clinics: IVI, Clinica Eugin, Institut Marquès, Fertty. See our full IVF in Spain guide →
🇨🇿 Czech Republic: Most Affordable
The Czech Republic — particularly Brno and Prague — offers the lowest cost donor egg IVF in Europe for UK patients. Reprofit International in Brno is one of the continent's highest-volume donor egg clinics.
Advantages
- • Lowest clinic fees in Europe (from £3,000)
- • Very experienced embryology teams
- • EU-regulated medical standards
- • Affordable accommodation in Brno
- • Short flight from UK (under 2 hours)
Considerations
- • Same-sex couples NOT eligible
- • Anonymous donation
- • Brno requires Prague connection (2.5 hr)
- • English support varies by clinic
Top clinics: Reprofit International (Brno), IVF Cube (Prague), Unica (Brno/Prague). See our Czech Republic IVF guide →
🇬🇷 Greece: Best for LGBTQ+ and Over 45s
Greece offers treatment for same-sex female couples and has a legal age limit of up to 50 — higher than most Spanish clinics and significantly above the Czech Republic. It's a natural fit for patients who fall outside Czech eligibility or want an alternative to Spain.
Advantages
- • Same-sex female couples welcome
- • Legal age limit up to 50
- • World-class embryology (Embryolab)
- • Competitive costs
- • Good English support at top clinics
Considerations
- • 3–4 hour flight from UK (longer than Czech/Spain)
- • Smaller clinic choice than Spain
- • Anonymous donation
- • Some clinics primarily Thessaloniki-based
Top clinics: Embryolab (Thessaloniki), IVF Athens, Assisting Nature (Thessaloniki). See our Greece IVF guide →

The Anonymity Question
All three countries require anonymous donation — this is the most important difference from UK treatment for many families:
🇬🇧 UK (post-2005 donors)
Donor-conceived children can request donor identity information at age 18. Donors must agree to this before donating. Identity information is held by the HFEA.
🇪🇸🇨🇿🇬🇷 Abroad
Donation is legally anonymous. Donor-conceived children cannot access identifying information through any legal route. Some families use DNA ancestry databases — but this is outside the legal framework.
Recommended resource: The Donor Conception Network (DCN) offers excellent guidance for families considering donor treatment — including how to talk to children about their origins. Many families who go abroad choose to be open with their children about their conception story, even without legal identity disclosure.
